I feel lukewarm about this movie. I thought Ryan Gosling carried the movie, as well as the lady who played weird Barbie. More Will Ferrel would've been nice. Margot Robbie looked the part and that is about it. Her acting was robotic and not compelling whatsoever. No onscreen chemistry with Gosling, at all. This could've been as iconic as Legally Blonde but instead it feels like stale white feminism in 2023.
This being said, the costume design deserves an Oscar. But the editing was choppy, too. A lot of scenes that went nowhere, unfunny lines. Not sure what emotions the movie was supposed to provoke. I would've preferred just a goofy film about Barbie, but instead it tried to be deep or something.
There were many times during the movie where I felt like there should be music playing and there wasn't. Awkward close up shots of actors just delivering lines. What seemed like REALLY choppy editing.
Seems like all the money was spent on cool visuals and not enough on writing, editing and music.
