You want an “original” take on a story as old as time? You want a Cinderella that’s only BASED off of the original but retold entirely? Watch this. It’s not that bad.
To me, it’s not really a Cinderella story. It has a few similarities (a prince, stepfamily, and godmother). Outside of those 3 things, this is an entirely different plot, message, and storyline.
Some parts didn’t even make sense anymore like the shoe fitting. In this version, he knows what she looks like before and after the ball? Why does she need to fit a shoe to be identified?
This also didn’t resonate with me as a musical. I enjoyed many of the songs, but it felt like an extended, elaborate, lip-synced music video.
If you liked it because of a diverse cast, but also want a musical with musical talent and a storyline more true to the original tale… Do yourself a favor, and watch Cinderella (1997) starring Brandy Norwood and Whitney Houston.
This was okay to watch, but unfortunately, did not live up to the hype.
