Spoilers obviously,
This movie had an amazing idea and an amazing premise, but I feel like ultimately the writing hurts it horribly. The actors are great and cgi is pretty well done even if there’s only a little bit of it. The story is a good and the horror elements are nice and keeps you on your toes, but again the writers threw so many random things in last minute that ultimately either should’ve been a thing from the beginning or not there at all.
For one, the little brother Nathan that is technically introduced at the beginning but we don’t see him till most of the movie is already over. A better plot line would’ve been that we see him in the beginning and slowly he fades out of the narrative until we don’t see him anymore. Then when Ben remembers his brother, is reintroduced and creates a believable family. Throwing him in out of nowhere felt jarring and took me out of the film.
For two, so many plot holes around The Wretch and its weaknesses. We the audience see that the wretch, like most other supernatural creatures, are weak to salt. While the wretch is possessing one of the characters after the main character pours salt around the house, the wretch is able to completely bypass it and ultimately makes this weakness meaningless and either shouldn’t have been a thing in the first place or there needs to a narrative point as to how the wretch got into the house.
And finally, the ending makes everything pointless. While yes our main cast were able to save their families in the end, we find that is heavily hinted that the wretch possessed one of the main cast after it had supposedly been defeated. This tells me that our main cast is still in danger and ultimately they’ll have to face the wretch again at some point. Which means that the casts actions were pointless and meaningless. If you want to do a “or is it the end?” Sort of ending, have it make sense. Something that feeding into an idea of a theme like “history repeats itself” or something like that.
This movie is ultimately a 5/10 for me and it’s mainly due to the fact that the script and the storyline in general felt like it never went past it’s 2nd or even 3rd draft and nothing was refined from them. I would love to see this team make another horror film because they do have good plots and ideas, but I would like to see them do better in their next film and try not to leave so many plot holes.
