Nearly 30 years later and I still can't stop watching this show. I miss it, but I'm glad I have my DVDs. Shows like this one are so rare that they are like comets seen only once in a lifetime. Everything lined up with the universe, great concept, amazing chemistry of the leads, great writers, and a brand new network willing to let it grow. The X-files became its own X-file that grew beyond its confines, and we are so much better for it.
You can see how many shows ripped off the X-files. It was a mix of scifi, horror, philosophy, and government mistrust. It's weird how many episodes predicted the future.
I think the stand alone episodes are the best, especially the ones written by Darren Morgan. The mythology episodes soon become confusing and as clear as mudd all the way to the end of the series. Even the creator, Chris Carter, couldn't keep it straight. It becomes obvious that the creator lost sight of the mythology pretty quickly. I'm glad I was never invested in those.
