I got to know Ernest Gordon toward the end of his life. Later connected with his son Alistar. The book (originally titled Miracle of the River Kwaii) went through a few changes. Ernest told me some of the most difficult experiences were edited out as the publisher didn't think the public could handle it. I feel the book was more true to the story and especially the personality of Dusty Miller - a simple man with an extraordinary heart. The movie is well done. If interested in reading I'd see if earlier versions are available anywhere.

Stunning portrayal of the human condition. The characters are rich in life albeit in the most subtle British way. Everyone has the opportunity to choose their place in both the real and unreal scheme of things. The truth of what we see as nobility is expressed by the simple straight forward amateur archeologist and his employer. These are noble souls
