Watched Laila Majnu today in PVR. Blame poor marketing, I didn't even know when it had released originally in 2018.
Till today I didn't know Tripti stars in the movie. Tripti Dimri is on fire in Laila Majnu. She played the author backed role with so much sass and confidence. Full marks here.
I didn't even know she had done movies before Animal. It's a shame, she got fame due to that silly semi nude (it was a joke) blink-and-you-miss-it scene. She sure has huge potential. Only if Indian male audience is not adamant on turning her into a soft porn star. I see a lot of spark, soul and spunk (plus pahadi beauty) in her.
Avinash Tiwary is a revelation. In his introductory scene, I was like, why Imtiaz cast this odd looking clown. But his acting grew on me faster than you can cook maggi. Weird at times, he stole the show. I just googled that he's 39 which is a pity because he hardly has any time left for leads, thanks to the (global) ageist society. Though I loved the work of Avinash, I was secretly missing my favorite Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Qais. He would have made the role of a mad man Majnu iconic. Villain Sumit Kaul with his Kashmiri accent was amazing too.
It was also refreshing to see a Kashmir story with zero agenda or political narratives.
Being a massive Imtiaz Ali fan, I am adding this into my favorite movies. It's not perfect but I liked it. And the songs are 💞
Laila Majnu has re-released in theatres. Go watch it now. It was a housefull.
Laila Majnu is a flawed movie, but Imtiaz is able to make his point. And his fans know it. And he knows that, haha.
