It's a modern opera on film. The use of theatrical devices makes it feel much more like you're watching something live as it happens. There are cliche' elements of the story; a hollywood couple (seemingly opposites) who fall madly and have a child, then fight as one star loses luster. There is a nod to Pinnochio, to the Opera conductor/director and their star pupil, to the parent who prostitutes his talented child for personal gain...
Overall, it is both captivating and deeply troubling in examining human frailty with a good dose of camp, recitative, and quite a bit of hot air.
