I’m seeing a lot of yays and nays in the review feed, mostly nays though. Whether it was not of your expectations, far from the original, or wasn’t of your taste, I do so apologize. But please don’t be so harsh as to instruct others not to watch something that wasn’t just meant for you. In my personal opinion, I found the movie to be wonderful.
I’m not sure what it was people expected from this film but in any circumstance, you should never expect perfection. There wasn’t much that I disliked about the movie. There were several humorous jokes, design details, and subtle messages anyone could find entertaining or, at the very least, thought-provoking. The skits and dialogue are well written just as the animation is well made. If you were looking for a plot, it won’t show itself so openly. My thought is, if a “horrible” family meets a “normal” community, was sort of events would ensue? Or perhaps, this was just an animated film designed to entertain. A story is not required to do so, if there wasn’t one already.
Besides this years film, the only Addams Family movie I’ve seen was when the long lost Fester returns with a wiped memory. Despite my young age at the time, I actually found it rather fascinating, for it was so unlike anything I’ve seen before. Now that I’m older and less naive, I learned not to expect adaptations to be so similar to their originals. I see the great difference between them as a sign of respect. Adaptations are a way of keeping the memory of the originals alive but never made to be an exact copy. In this case, the Addams Family has been given freedom to perform more dynamic movements thanks to animation to compensate for that lack of realness. Of course it doesn’t top the original ‘cause it was never meant to be. It’s just the same but different in its own way.
I can understand there are several visuals and dialogues some people may not consider appropriate. But that’s is to be expected of the Addams family, the most terrifying and horrific group of individuals in the neighborhood. To be disturbing and disgusting is part of their charm. And for those believing they weren’t good enough in that aspect, be considerate of the many other audiences that could be watching the film.
But what I find most notable of the movie is the many messages that reside in it. Like the original, these Addams teach you to embrace being who you are. The movie is satire of the words ‘normal’ and ‘different’. In truth, there is no such thing as ‘normal’, its just a title given to those who fall in with the masses. And to be called ‘different’ is ironic, given that at our very core, we are the same people. Other messages the movie addresses are: family being there for one another, not to judge people because they are ‘different’, and don’t let traditions restrict you from being the best ‘you’ that you can be.
I write this review in hopes that it will reach out to those who say nay to this year’s Addams Family and let those who have yet to see the film know that I myself enjoyed watching it.
