I find it funny that many people are saying “you just don’t think it’s good because it’s not a shot for shot remake of the animation.
This is wrong.
Even from episode 1 it’s clear to see what is fundamentally wrong with this adaptation.
The actors and director do not understand these characters.
This series lacks the nuances of the original and the characters are extremely one dimensional.
Instead of Jet being the self-righteous and charming yet manipulative leader of the freedom fighters he is just straight up a terrorist and doesn’t even try to hide it. Katara “falls in love” with Jet simply because the story needs her to.
And while this is definitely better than the live action movie. This show has many, many flaws. Most of the acting is just horrible. This is even more clear to see when you have bad actors in scenes with great actors. It’s clear that Dallas James Liu is putting the effort in to try and be Zuko but his performance is completely lost when compared to Paul Sun-Hyung Lee‘s Iroh.
Azula is in no way the imposing or intimidating force of nature she was in the original. She is supposed to be Zuko’s counterpart. A powerful firebender who exudes raw talent, yet fails to realise her shortcomings because of her own narcissism. And yes Elizabeth Yu has the narcissism of Azula down pat she just doesn’t come off as the unhinged threat Azula was in the original.
Even not comparing it to the original. The dialogue is stiff and unrealistic. Katara, Sokka and Aang have no chemistry whatsoever. The same problem arises with Ty Lee, Mai and Azula.
The only good parts of this series are Danny Pudi as the Mechanist, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, and I must say George Takei as Koh the Face Stealer is fantastic!
There is really no reason to watch this show when you have the original.
