Saw it last night. I've never seen the play, and also already went into it having heard it was bad, so take this review with a grain of salt--though my mom has seen the play twice and she also didn't like it.
First of all, I think it never should have been made into a movie. The plot of the original from what I understand is that it kinda has no plot, and that definitely doesn't lend itself well to the big screen and is very confusing for anyone who hasn't seen the play. The worst thing about this movie was the CGI and the best thing was the lighting and scenery. The songs were okay in my opinion with the exception of a few really good ones, but that's of course a matter of opinion. The CGI made the dancing look really weird, and their faces looked really weird too, especially the main cat which Victoria which was kinda disappointing because she's the main character. the human noses really throws it off. I feel like a little black or pink dot on the tip of the nose would have helped things. and with the realistic digital fur, why don't they have whiskers? Also their tails moved really weird, like they weren't really affected by gravity? maybe it's to emulate the movement of actual cats which I can understand but I don't think it was a good choice because they look like humans body-wise and it ends up looking just unnatural (which like i mentioned earlier makes the dancing look worse which sucks cause the dancers are probably very talented. the movement is so reduced that it doesn't really look dynamic, just awkward) Also they are too small! I kind of understand that if they made them bigger than they would have been too tall, but maybe they should have walked on all fours or something because they really looked hilariously small. also some cats are wearing clothes and some are totally cat naked, which is funny. Moving on, if you've never seen the play you're going to leave confused as to what the heck a "jellicle cat" is. There is basically no plot, (minor spoiler ahead) they introduce a bunch of cats just to make the ending of the story about a character they barely developed--pretty much none of the characters are developed. this might work well in the stage play but for the average moviegoer it is confusing! All that being said...do I think it was a bad movie? yes. but was it entertaining? yes! some of the CGI was so bad I had to laugh. There was one scene where the cats were wearing nothing but sneakers and dancing really awkwardly and I laughed so hard I cried. I feel like I had a bonding experience with everyone in that theater. After the show, one singular person clapped super hard. I don't know if it was to be funny or because they genuinely loved it. The actual jokes were really corny, but some of the actual serious stuff like when the strange CGI human cat hybrids nuzzled each other was truly hilarious to me because it looked so strange. Final statement- if you're not a diehard fan of the play, you'll probably think it's bad. It never should have been adapted to film in this strange CGI laden, plot lacking way.
