I think that if you are in Shirley MacLaine's generation, you take in The Last Word through the filter of the experience that got you there. If you are in Amanda Seyfried's 30-something group, you see a completely different film. Mortality is the great equalizer, and MacLaine's performance brings it front and center for those of us facing in the same direction as MacLaine's character. Seyfried's generation has Wonder Woman genes and of course is immortal. I think the reviews of The Last Word reflect this dichotomy of perspective. This film deconstructs real life in a more profound way than than most and, if you think you may die someday, it's a worthy preview despite itself.
