No stereotypes here....the Shuggie we first meet us a disaffected and dissembling young man serving his time on the deli counter,. The way he talks about and relates to his frumpy female coworkers gives insight to his sensitivity and eye for detail.
Agnes in any other work would be an object of contempt, all the ingredients are there, but what shine clear are her beauty, pride and guts. No matter what happened the night before, she sets her hair and holds her head high. The story is devastating but the lady, real or imagined, taught a lesson in pride and perseverance.
The son, an innocent in an inverted Wonderland, takes the lesson to heart. For sure he will find success.
