I’ve played this game about a dozen times in my life. I’m 31 now and found this game as a rental when I was about 11 and ended up buying the game from the video rental store because I loved it so much and quite frankly I hadn’t nearly finished it yet and I needed more. I was still on the first disk after a week and there were 3 more to go afterwards!!
To this day it remains my all time favorite in any genre, I can not recommend it to the rpg nerd enough. I have over 140 hours in since the ps digital release. People bagged this game for trying to be a ff copy when it released, but it wasn’t trying to be that at all. In my opinion at the time this game came out it was easily one of the most impactful in the rpg genre to those who had the opportunity to play. You can match standard tropes to any character but this game is a carefully measured adventure, a master class in engaging a player with deep narratives and characters you will never forget.
From a time when you bought a game and got 100 percent of its content, when graphics were still finding their place and video games were transforming into a worldwide enterprise that threatens to never die down. This game defined a genre and all its best aspects and I believe it’s a game that is still relevant enough to play and enjoy. If you can get past a little bit of old school pixelated graphics this game actually has some amazing environments, great combat, soundtrack and even some especially well developed cut scenes; better than any game of its kind in that day and even to this day I would argue a contender for one of the best rpgs of all time.
Any review that says this game is soulless or trash, etc must have not put any time into the game. This is a game that isn’t immediately rewarding it’s a memorable adventure that sticks with you and it has to be experienced. You might even cry and scream at least a couple times from beginning to end. It’s a game with a narrative that will literally have you questioning aspects of life.
