Written about thirty five years ago the first half of the book feels more than a bit dated. But then it suddenly springs into action and the surprises ( did I read shocks?) begins to kick in and continues on a fairly regular basis. Readers of James' supernatural thrillers will not be disappointed.

A highbrow movie slow moving in the extreme but thoughtful and provocative. A fantastic performance from Cate Blanchett. Has to be one of her finest roles.
