This book is not only difficult to follow but completely fanciful in the telling. The characters are well defined and even somewhat relatable.But the transitions from past to present are hard to follow and I found myself going back and forth between pages to try to figure out what was going on. Characters come and go, not always well identified or even necessary. Ruth one heart appears and is someone’s great great Aunt. And then disappears literally and figuratively? She had a role to play in the present day story but not sure why her disappearance was necessary. The book’s conclusion is just a chaotic miss in my opinion. Some of the final revelations were already revealed, some never explained. All in all I do not recommend this book.

After listening to the audio book both my husband and I were eager to see the movie. Beautiful scenery and a sincere effort to tell the original story but sadly falls short. Starting with the trial was a great introduction but lacking in the rich details and engaging components of the original book. Kya was left as a child and then in her mid teens? Nothing to describe the trials she overcame to get there. Nice introduction to Tate then fast forward to the sexual part of the relationship? Not part of the book. Then Chad and his betrayal? So much missing in the interim. The book did not focus at all on two different sexuality charged relationships as the movie did.. the book was so much more than that. A enjoyable movie on its own but not true to the original story which made me disappointed. Kya Tate and Chad characters were well played for the roles they were given but so much missing from the book’s original story potential. Too much of the original beauty and mystery of the original book sadly lacking.
