this movie was an absolutely fantastic and profound piece of art. it tackles so many mature topics, from identity to the struggles of womanhood to what it means to be human, while still managing to be comical and downright hilarious. several times, i burst into loud and joyful laughter in the theater. i was also moved to near tears at several key points in the film.
the trailers intentionally portray this to be a goofy, lighthearted spoof about life-sized Barbie and Ken dolls in order to have its deeper emotional themes take viewers by surprise. going into a movie like Oppenheimer or the Sound of Freedom, you'd expect to have your heart played with; these are marketed as intense and introspective films. however, with Barbie, viewers leave surprised at the themes presented, and might even take them more to heart.
to those of you who watched it and felt like it was a "man-hating ultra-feminism woke dumpster fire," that was the point. there's a beautiful irony about people missing the satire of Barbieland (a place where women hold the power, and men are just there as background characters) being a polar opposite to the real world (in which men hold the power, and women are expected to follow it). the more you complain, the more it becomes obvious that the point of the film and the themes present flew over your head. r/woosh.
i'll definitely be watching this movie again. greta gerwig, your brainchild is a masterpiece, and i cannot wait to see what else you come up with. god bless, and godspeed.
