While I’m glad the Story of Emmett Till is being told and bought to the big screen, I am disappointed in who was chosen as the actress to play Maime Till. She was too dainty and did not evoke much emotion from me and I feel she was a very watered down version of how Maime Till actually was. Her performance made the show difficult to watch because a few of the other characters upstaged her.
I loved the costuming and styling of each setting. That was beautifully done.
I learned a lot of aspects of Emmett’s story that I never knew like how they wanted his body buried in Mississippi before his mother even saw it ! This shows how much the law has abused its authority instead of doing the right thing and although there is lack luster acting, it’s a great educational piece that I hope children of every race get to see and understand and I hope that more black literature will be put on the reading curriculum for black children in middle school and high school!
Clenora Hudson Reed’s book about Emmet Till would be a great start.
