I waffled between 2 and 3 stars. My main criticism first - Depicting the actual rape twice felt exploitative (perhaps even once? But definitely the second time). Besides that - a mixed bag. The movie was entertaining for the first 90 minute, but becomes laborious by the third retelling. While we should hear the most from Marguerite, she actually is left with almost nothing to add to the story that hasn't already been said by the men (or been made clear through their scenes). Finally, the dialogue was stilted and awkward - granted, I wouldn't know how to depict Medieval French in a way that felt transportive - but this was laughable. Not a fan, personally, of the gore and I actually just left for the last 10 minutes. But I wouldn't knock off a star for that; most people are more tolerant of blood and gore.

Yuck. Why is sexual assault continually *glorified* in our entertainment as sexy? A man literally shows up - unasked - in bed with a woman in the middle of the night, says "I'll do things you can't imagine" as she repeatedly repels his advances. Then the next days she confides to her friend - along with her fear and attempts to resist - "I think I like him." WHAT?! Disgusting and confusing message.
