The story was so much of a rehashing of the original trilogy beginning with the return of the Emperor. Other parts of the movie simply made little sense.
Throwing the Emperor back into the story arc is artistically lazy. Rey’s journey to becoming a Jedi should follow a different path than Luke’s. The writers played it safe by staying formulaic and not reaching for more. It’s never even fully explained how Palpatine was able to return from the fiery depths of the Death Star’s reactor. He’s just back for effect.
The spacial connections between Rey and Ben made little sense. How are they fighting each other miles and miles away? There was no real explanation.
Then the relationship between Finn and Rey is never fully explored. The writers teased a blossoming love affair then seemed to back off of it due to the interracial component involved. Finn was about to profess his love for Rey when it seemed like they were all about to die then it’s never again disclosed in the movie what he wanted to say. It recalls Han and Leia’s staggered declarations of love in the original trilogy but without the satisfying finish. Terrible writing.
All in all this movie is the spawn of a novel science fiction story married to a great commercial empire. The artistic genius has been removed in the name of financial gain. All is left is a shell.
