First Kill is not to be judged by the first 15 minutes of it's first episode.
This is an old tale of love reworked for the modern world, with twists and backstories that will resonate to those familiar with the feuding families of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and the vampire/human Bella/Edward romance. Lifting inspiration from two classics makes for theft well executed because...
The acting is great. You will really feel things when you watch this spectacular ensemble of actors. This is a well carved out story providing many perspectives including: the parents struggle of having unmanageably independent kids, brotherly conflicts and camaraderie, sister problems..., politics and power, internal betrayal and much more.
As a member of the LGBT community I really enjoyed the representation and fresh storytelling. Early on I felt SO SO awkward watching actress Sarah Catherine Hook's awkward vampire character. It's a testament to the great acting skills by the actors. The cast is amazing, even if Juliette's sister Elinor is very annoying as a character.
Playing love interest Calliope Burns is Imani Lewis...very hot, fyi (is she a runway model? for real).
You have a strong central plot that allows the space for the telling of other characters stories like the Burns family of hunters. Always great to have both sides of the story.
Many online reviews pigeonhole the show as a YA(young adult) show for kids, probably having expected it to wow them in the first 15 minutes as the protagonist and her gay best friend drive around in a Jeep singing to the radio. It's a shame that so many reviewers did what I almost did and wrote the show off too quickly. It is BIGGER than that. I'm a 30 year old and I think I've found my Killing Eve replacement -a show for which Jodie Comer won an Emmy.
Don't make that mistake. This show needs a second season with Netflix.
