I absolutely love the book series and was thrilled to hear that it was to be made into a TV series. Alfred Molina perfectly fit my image of him from the books. Louise Penny created such a compelling community with rich relationships among all the key players that it seemed it would translate very well to the screen.
Instead the show and characters are flat with none of the warmth that had me waiting eagerly for the next book. The warmth and the depth of the characters and relationships are my favorite parts of this book series, none of which has been evidenced in the first 2.5 episodes (couldn't finish watching the 3rd one...) And the story line is dull, not nuanced like her writing. The townspeople seem petulant, suspicious and unappealing. Gamache and his team are slightly better though also not especially compelling or interesting.
I'm very disappointed. TV and movie adaptations rarely meet the richness of one's own imagination while reading a well written series. But this is beyond the pale.
