This is a breath of fresh air, yes, FromSoft has delivered yet again. This time. it's nice to not be an underpowered wretch of a creature with all the odds stacked against him. Instead, you are a hulking mech capable of smashing (most) other mechs in one fell swoop. However, the classic, punishing difficulty and spectacle in boss battles we've come to expect with FromSoft games is still here. I've read countless posts about people struggling with the first boss, and I'll be honest, I have yet to encounter a truly punishing boss (I'm several hours in). I think that this is the result of my familiarity with FromSoft games for the past decade plus. What's more, I think if you like games like Returnal, this game is for you. There's a lot happening on the screen, and while it is not a roguelike, ACVI is all about strategically positioning yourself for a death blow. I've also heard some gripes about the story, but, honestly, I have zero issues with the detached form of story-telling and minimal cutscenes. While I can appreciate a good story, more and more games are opting to separate the story from the gameplay, and I can appreciate a game that tells a story THROUGH the gameplay, as FromSoft has kind of always done.
While I have yet to beat this game, I can tell it's just an absolute gem through and through and I would have paid full price but was only reluctant because I'm not super familiar with the mech subgenre overall. I cannot wait to try the PvP mode. The whole "my mech is better than yours" idea strikes my fancy despite the fact that I am not the most competitive player around (Pokemon is about as competitive as I get).
