I love this book and continually refer back to it. Whatever conclusions he draws, he backs up with a lot of empirical information, which is refreshing. He makes no simple assertions or assessments but is, instead, careful to always situate the dog-human relationship in terms of time, place, and change. His knowledge is encyclopedic and comes from decades of experience working with dogs and studying the dog-human relation across a gamut of economic and social contexts.
