TLDR; The story is great, gameplay may not be for everyone but don't let that dissuade you, perfect Yakuza game for first time players to the series.
Only other Yakuza game I played is Yakuza
kiwami but after this, I will be playing the whole series.. have a lot of catching up to do. I'm not normally one to sit down and play games through and through without playing other games too. Nowadays games don't hook me and I would blame it on my attention span not being as grand as it use to be. This game completely dissolved that theory entirely. I played this game from start to finish, without touching anything else. The story was beyond captivating. Minus some very corny dialogue here and there, I was absolutely blown away with how enthralling the story is. The characters are so masterfully designed, from their personalities, their interactions with the protagonist and the world around them. Everything is finely crafted. I never skipped a cut scene. If I did accidentally I would revert my save just to make sure I didn't miss any key dialogue. It's very reminiscent of a Kojima production; with the amount of dialogue and the quality of the story. It isn't as grand as death stranding or metal gear solid, it's more human, and grounded in people's emotions. Really allowing you to connect with the characters on screen.
As far as gameplay goes, it feels like Pokemon for adults In the simplest terms. Some will understand when you say that and see the appeal, some will dislike it and not even give it a try. A lot of people are missing out on a wonderful experience just because the combat doesn't bode well with them.
Tons of mini games to keep you occupied, all with unique mechanics, art assets, dialogue, and most mini games even have their own "story" they aren't just markers on map to dump money into, and be a wasteful time sink.
