Part fun, part unbearable dialog from the most idiotic, spinelss adult characters I've ever seen.
------------------
Pros:
- Northwest woods mystery vibe
- 30 year-old small town coverup story
- Great acting
- Interesting, artistic shots
- All around a very fun show
Cons:
The fashionably spineless parents who set no boundaries (and apologize for not obeying their kids' whims better), plus a privileged main character who can do no wrong.
Seriously, the amount of affection the "cool-dad" pours on the nine year-old girl, plus the lack of boundaries, while desperately trying to keep her happy is super-weird.
Kid-driven shows need the adults out of the way so the kids can solve the problems. But that means the adults are dead, dumb, or degenerate. I've never seen a show where the adults are fully present AND the kids still run everything. There are literally no boundaries or consequences:
- Cops: "You skipped school? Well if you don't want to be there I guess there's nothing I can really do. Here, let me show you the evidence locker."
- Parents: "We have to make her stop posting stories. But, what can we do? There's no way we can change the wifi password! What to do, what to do... "
- Dad: "My best friend was kidnapped on a bike at night, so go ahead and take off on a BIKE AT NIGHT. I mean, you're nine and alone, what could happen?"
- Also Dad: "You stole something from the principal's office? I'm SO SORRY I didn't tell you more about my past sooner!
And p-please promise me you'll be careful...it's not my place to give you rules, so please? Just p-promise me?"
- Principal: "Your kid accused someone OF MURDER!"
Mom: "Can't stop my LITTLE GIRRRL!"
(cue Runaways)
As a parent, you will definitely need to suspend belief.
Here is the crux of the problem IMO:
- If a show is kid-driven, remove the adults.
- If adults are present, introduce boundaries for the kids—it's just another challenge for the kids to surmount.
But you have to pick, or you end up with unbelievably stupid adult characters that you pray don't really exist.
