Adam Sandler's only character is the lovable idiot. He reached the pinnacle of this character in Airheads. Don't ask more of the character. Just be the lovable idiot.
Gillmore and Madison were fun at the time. Still the lovable idiot, but now there's stakes riding on him. Who wouldn't want to see the lovable idiot succeed against odds. Needing to sit through a film where the lovable idiot is the lead is a big ask.
Now he's reaching into new territory as the lovable idiot. What if it's an unlovable idiot? I've known a fair share of grifters and hustlers in my life. You can love them. You can root for them. If you've never watched one destroy themselves while waiting to catch that lucky break, you can get an approximation from this film. Better lucky than good is the saying. That holds true here.
I just can't say if he does eventually catch that lucky break in this film. I've known too many people like this. I know how that story plays out. I've seen Sandler's other lovable idiot films and can guess how this plays out. Truth is, I stepped out to take a piss 90 min in and had no desire to go back.
I just didn't care about the characters. Watching someone I don't care about self destruct just to hit that lucky break just doesn't appeal to me anymore. I no hate. No love. Just ambivalence and boredom.
