From the first episode here’s my takeaway: the characters are all far too serious versions of themselves with extremely watered down personalities. Especially, Aang, Iroh, and Sokka. I don’t think removing Sokka’s sexism is the problem (or the only one at least), he’s just too serious, but not even in the way that the animated version of him was. They removed any essence of comedic relief. I wasn’t looking for a shot for shot remake and I anticipated that they would have to make some changes to or omit some details but it really feels like they changed as many small details and some larger and more significant ones as they could, just for the sake of changing it. An example being that they omitted Katara accidentally breaking the iceberg that reveals Aang, showing how powerful she really is even before she realizes it. My expectations were low going into it and I hoped that those low expectations would at least be met but even they weren’t. I still plan on watching the rest of it so my opinion may change, hence the 2 stars instead of 1, but if the show continues this way it surely won’t.
