I kept plowing through this mess waiting for suspense, a twist—SOMETHING. But it was chapter after chapter of how to scrounge up money to pay a ransom. That’s it. I almost quit several times while reading it and wish I had. This is not Grisham at his best or remotely close to it.

SO underrated when it was released, but I loved it then and love it even more now. Witty, imaginative, surprisingly moving. Great acting (especially Rip Torn in a supporting role). And somehow even more relevant than it was 30 years ago. Don’t let its original box-office influence you. This is Albert Brooks at his very best.
