I was so excited for this movie to come out, I loved the music and listened to it constantly, my sister and I waited to watch it together on a weekend because we were so hyped.
Unfortunately, the story is all over the place. It brings up the loss of Suzu's mother, her not being able to connect with her dad, her crush on a childhood friend, girls starting rumors about her, struggling with harassment online, the internet cops, becoming friends with the Beast, the Beast's abusive dad, and explores none of these ideas.
By the end of the movie I completely forgot about Suzu's dead mom and was concerned about why a bunch of adults were encouraging Suzu to confront her friend's physically abusive father alone. She has no chemistry with her crush so I don't know why they like each other. Her conflict with her dad is straight-up never mentioned after the beginning. And her face-off with her friend's abusive dad ended with the power of staring angrily at him, so I guess he'll never hit his kids again???
The only good part was Suzu awkwardly helping her friends ask each other out. It was the only part of the movie that felt realistic and heartfelt, though extremely out of place.
