It’s Avatar meets Baz Luhrmann and as a fan of Luc Besson and French graphic novels (or Heavy Metal magazine in the US) i love this film. At the same time i can see why it was not a classic Hollywood/box office success. I think it comes down to casting of two relatively unknowns for the lead roles. The lead characters ARE strange (they’re young and brash) but the portrayal in the movie is consistent with the fantasy/feeling conveyed in pen and ink. The result is exotic and may challenge the American aesthetic and sensibility. The viewer will either love this, hate it, or find it confusing depending on their cultural expectations. Admittedly the movie could have benefitted from better casting and/or dialogue for the two leads but the plot and visuals are classic Luc Besson and people who enjoyed the 5th Element will like this film. In my experience movies this artistic (of this genre) come around only once in a decade.
