Visuals: 5/5
Cinematography, scenery, landscapes, cgi, and so on are visually stunning. However, I don't go to watch movies simply because they look great. I watch movies for the compelling storytelling.
Acting: 4/5
I really wish I could give this a 5/5. I'm sure the actors poured their hearts out on this movie and did the best they could with what they were given. If the script, dialogue, and action sequences were given as much effort as the actors gave, this may have been a compelling movie.
Story: 1/5
Chi is a cop-out. A cheat.
And character development? What character development? The point of Mulan is supposed to be about challenging conventional roles for women and the internal struggle Mulan overcomes pertaining to the inability to identify to the role she is expected to fit into and resolving into defining her own identity as a woman.
I am thoroughly disappointed that Mulan does not pray to the ancestors, even if the ancestors do not answer in this film, her internal conflict could have been expressed and therefore conveyed the theme to the audience before deciding throwing on the armor and answering the call to adventure. THIS IS A HUGE HOLE IN THE HEART OF THE MOVIE. The theme is never fully expressed, but expected to be assumed.
In fact, stating the theme is not actualized until after an hour into the movie and if you have already seen it, you know what fateful meeting (with a certain important antagonist) I'm speaking of.
