In a recent episode Waleed Aly suggested Australia should follow Germany in tackling emissions and global warming. He mentioned that Germany has phased out black coal and is about to do same with Brown coal. In reality plan is to phase out brown coal in 18 years ! Energy in Germany comes from fossil fuels, nuclear, biomass and renewables and 70% of that energy derived from coal & natural gas.Biomass contributes significantly towards CO2 emissions , much more than coal.
Germany failed to achieve Kyoto 2020 targets and likely to achieve that only in 2028 where as Australia did achieve that.
Germany's domestic supply of electricity is 41% higher than in Australia.
I understand that Germany is the biggest producer of Lignite which emits more co2 than coal.
In view of above facts Germany is not such a great example to follow. Would like a more balanced representation of facts in the PROJECT
