Anyone who has studied film and understands "the magical Negro" trope will appreciate this film. To the regular, untrained, uneducated (in film specifically), you'll completely miss the humour, irony, and the commentary.
Unless, of course, you have lived experience growing up seeing yourself represented in TV shows and movies but only as the sidekick. Unless you've spent your life apologizing for existing in white society only to realize that you deserve to exist, and God made you in His image, too (Genesis 1:26). Unless you understand how it feels to be a person of colour, experiencing racism, yet YOU have to comfort THEM while they antagonize you...
This movie is great for increasing empathy. It should share a different perspective to white people in western society. If you take the time to understand what's being said, rather than being offended, maybe you'd realize how to solve the divide between races: EMPATHY and using your own powers for good.
if you're a white person who can't chuckle at yourself or see yourself from another perspective, of course you'll leave a butthurt 1 star review and recruit more of your reddit buddies to do the same (that includes the ones masquerading as Black people, too. don't think we can't tell).
Go see this movie after you've studied the trope. But if it's not for you, it's not for you. Personally, I enjoyed it. Especially the part where the main character has his monologue yet the people around him are STILL not listening, STILL talking over him, STILL ignoring his humanity in favour of their egoes. IT WAS DEEP. The shark part was pretty funny too 😂
