If I had to sum this up in one word... Disappointing.
Pros:
- Very good scenery, costume, special effects etc (what we all know and love about Star Wars).
- Good diversity* (more on this as it is clearly the elephant in the room).
- Lighting is good unlike a lot of series these days (I'm sure Game of Thrones started off the downward spiral at the Battle for Winterfell with poor lighting).
- Main cast acting is solid.
That's probably about it for the pros unfortunately.
Cons:
- Silly mistakes which really shouldn't be in there such as the fire in space (no oxygen = no fire). If they really wanted to keep that then they should have explained it was a pipe which carried oxygen around the ship or something like that. In addition, the ship crashing and all Osha did was strap herself into what looked like a makeshift ship seat and after the crash she is led on the floor (unharmed) and her seatbelts have magically vanished?
- Some dialog is absolutely atrocious and if you watch it then you'll immediately pick up on it.
- Support acting is poor overall.
- Unnecessary scenes (Osha on the cliff and falling for no reason to be saved - may as well have just skipped that part as there is zero benefit in it)
- The story had promise but they literally ruined it by revealing everything so early... Should have made Mae fully masked so it kept intrigue and left parts to later episodes because now I have a horrible feeling that a large proportion of the show is going to be flashback galore which won't really add much more to what we already know (there will inevitably be some info which we will learn but I can't see it being loads).
- Fight choreography is very robotic and you could probably find little kids play fighting with sticks more exciting and fluid.
- Chemistry between characters is weird. It would have been better if Master Sol and Jedi Knight Yord were actually Master and Padawan as they seem to have the best screen chemistry. The actual Padawan is a like Hermione Granger in that she gets her 20p in but in a bit of an annoying fashion (lame lines).
* Now to address that elephant: Yes diversity is good in TV and more so in Star Wars as it potentially means more fans/interest so more content in the future.
However, it is so poorly done in this show that it has become ironically prejudice to white guys and it's not even subtle.
If Disney is dead set on going down this route then they really need to just give the fans what they really want and create stand alone series for Mace Windu and/or Kelleran Beq. They have done this already with Ashoka and Obi-Wan so there's really no excuse.
My main issue with all this is that they are trying to force something (no pun intended) when it really doesn't need to be... There are interesting diverse characters already existing which could be explored further without the need to establish background story.
Disney need to channel a lot of their funding into solid storylines which aren't ruined within 30 minutes of the first episode, reduce silly mistakes and remove unnecessary scenes.
