Children of Morta is a game that truly surprised me. When I saw the demo on XBLA I didn't know what to make of it. I downloaded said game and began playing at breakneck speeds attempting to get all I could out of the demo. I wanted to experience as much as I could before making a purchase. Within minutes I was in my first dungeon and I was helplessly hooked.
The games pixel art graphics are very well done as is the set pieces you will experience while playing. What really hit me was the quality of the sound. I have never witnessed an indy title with voice acting this good...no, that won't do...transcendent. I'm not kidding here, the voice work would not feel out of place in a big budget AAA title.
The gameplay is another bright spot as everything just plain works. I enjoy having different modes of attack utilizing either the X button or the right stick for more pinpoint directional strikes. Further, getting various magical items for your characters really rounds out the combat quite nicely. Speaking of the characters...this game features 6 different characters that all have their own unique style. I found it very easy to pick up and play with every character.
Unfortunately, not all is perfect with The Children of Morta. I feel some things could have been explained a little better and I'm still not quite certain how to respec my characters. All in all this is my sole issue with this otherwise amazing title. If you love Diablo and are craving more with an original flair check this game out. What truly blew me away was that they made a physical version and I picked it up straight away! What an amazing find!
