This was so offensive to watch. Disgusting. The only thing going for it is the beautiful graphics. They BUTCHERED the story line. As a huge fan of both books, i was a special level of disappointed watching this.
They butchered-
1.Wade's financial status (he was super poor in the book)
2. The way he met all of the characters (he met Art3mis at the first challenge, playing Joust against Anorak)
3. Wade's relationship with his aunt. (She stole his stuff and treated him terrible)
4. Og's involvement was minimized even though he saved Wade and Samantha from IOI during that dance at his club, and again when he let them live in his mansion to finish the contest.
5. When Wade met the others in person.
6. Cut out a huge chunk where Wade hid away in an apartment with a fake identity.
7. Wade infiltrated IOI, not Samantha.
8. The characters don't look like their book description pretty much at all.
9. It's Shoto, not Sho.
10. Dioto died in real life in the book.
11. The tasks required to get each key were totally different. Plus, the keys weren't hidden near the gates. Both had to be found after hard work deciphering the things written on the keys or at the gates.
12. The time line was made to feel waaaayyyyyy too short. This contest took 5 years to win in the book.
13. Why didn't Wade receive the robes of Anorak?
14. There was way too much missing and changed to even enjoy the movie. Every 3 minutes i was saying "noooo, that's not right"
15. They never shut the oasis down 2 days a week.... like really?!
They should have stuck to the book and maybe even made it a series, not a movie. If you can't do it right, why do it? Yuck.
There are lots more little details i left out but this is the stuff that's currently rubbing me wrong.
I suggest everyone who likes this movie, read or listen to (highly suggest) the books. They're amazing and so well written, plus Wil Wheaton is an amazing narrator. He really brought the books to life for me as an audio book fan.
