Quite entertaining overall, although let down by a bit of dubious casting and appealing acting.
This ranges from the excellent (Emma D'Arcy as queen Rhaenyra, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower) to the extremely poor (Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Fabien Frankel as Sir Criston Cole) and the Velaryon daughters.
Emma D"Arcy flawlessly displays the grace and power of the struggling queen, while Rhys Ifans shows the depth of intelligence and leadership required by a hand. Both of these excellent actors would also be perfect as narrators.
Looking at the flip side, Sonoya struggles to show any depth of character, she speaks her lines in a monotone way, with a muddled, distracting attempt of a foreign accent. You would get a better display of emotion from your Google home. This is the case for most of the other characters such as the Velaryon daughters that initially try to sound regal but soon forget and sound like inner city London.
The vulpine Ewan Mitchell is perfectly cast as Aemond, whereas every scene with Matt Smith as Daemon shows him furrowing his brow with no eye brows on a rubber like face. His high pitched voice doesn't fit the character, he's hopelessly out of his depth.
I find a lot of the other side characters such as Ulf irritating and forgettable fillers. It's difficult to see how any characters in HoTD will have an arc, they are so one dimensional. An exception in my opinion is the witch, Alys Rivers, played really well by
Gayle Rankin, interesting in every scene.
Game of Thrones seasons 1 to 4 where some of the best TV produced, based on the lore. After reaching the end of season 2 of House of the Dragon, it tries its best to live up to its parent show and in some scenes holds its own.. but for me, it can't get there without the acting talents of Game of Thrones. Disappointed.
