JJ Abrams did well with the baton he was handed. When the previous director decides to kill off all the antagonists in the middle of a trilogy you have to do the best you can. The faults of film are all on Disney for not putting together a comprehensive story right from the beginning.
Compared with Last Jedi, at least this movie felt like Star Wars... and no one drank any milk from a weird alien teat!
