I still miss the ABC sports coverage of the earlier Olympics where some history of the competitors was given before the big races. This year, at the closing ceremonies, I couldn't recognize the countries from which the participants were, and the announcers were of no help. They just talked amongst themselves.
I didn't need a tour of Tara and Johnny's luggage this week. Now, I know she brought 39 pairs of shoes, and Johnny brought even more stuff. Why do we care? Japan has small rooms, too, according to the Nagano announcers back then. When have the announcers become the news? How about better announcers who can identify the countries being shown on the screen behind them? With masks, it might be too much to ask for identities of the participants on the screen, but surely some explanation of the symbols, people, teams, etc.
I watched a lot of the games this year. Too bad the Tokyo locals couldn't have gotten vaccinated in time to attend some of the games. This popped the bubble of crowds supporting the athletes who worked so long and hard for this Olympiad. Fully vaccinated parents and siblings should have been allowed to attend as well as fully vaccinated locals. Let's hope the winter Olympiad is better represented by supporters of the athletes. So many others have been travelling for other reasons, I think the Olympics would have been a good reason for those closest to it. Vaccinated and masked watchers.
