It's not easy to understand the movie in the beginning as we are not sure how the characters are related to each other and moreover there are dialogues in English Hindi and Bengali. But slowly we get into the rhythm of the typical family insensitivities. The main character Shutu who is sensitive and docile still misses his dead father . There's not a single soul on whom he can lean for strength, there's a father figure absolutely missing in his life. Though he tries to cope with it through love but fails because no one loves a meek person. Hence his suicide, even though his mother desperately needed him but he somehow is unable to find the strength to survive .

It's an excellent film that will never grow old, as it deals of eternal problems of life itself. The movie starts and ends with a death scene. Who is the "Adversary "? The city , which is as heartless as any in the world for a youth seeking a dignified life, or even the human body itself which will eventually be dead, no matter what you do. But there's hope , which comes through the bird's songs, which the protagonist keeps seeking in the city vainly but eventually finds it outside it.
