There is truth to Abruzzo’title. He weaves stories with a strong spirituality where we learn about life and love from the least of us. But isn’t that God’s way. Jesus was not a friend of the establishment. So too Mr Abruzzo’s life work was with the outcast and those who knew they were sinners. Throughout there are acts of mercy and love which seem inconceivable without the power of God. Taking on the fictional character of an attorney not to the rich and famous but to the underprivileged Abruzzo often experiences the frustration and sense of failure and yet never gives up. There is a sense it is his mission field. The story of a mother’s ultimate sacrifice for her child strengthens the narrative that we are spiritual beings and earth is not our forever. Abruzzo integrates a multicultural milieu of places, characters which bring veracity to the stories. The story about death with dignity during Covid was inspiring. Abruzzo acknowledges that all are sinners even those we presume to be more holy and we live in a fallen world but there is hope thanks to the light that shines in us when we seek to do the next right thing and recognize our love for others comes from above.
