Pretty Good
I was skeptical getting into this because of the very mixed reviews. My oldest son grew up watching the original and was sure this would suck.
It's quite mixed in the beginning and has some parts that make you scratch your head in the middle, but by the ends this adaptation is quite good even with some of the liberties taken over the source material.
Things that work
- Spirit of each character even if not a perfect replica
- It's easy to get tripped up on characters not being exactly the same, lines being different, etc. if you can get past that, the characters actually grow on you.
- Some of the younger actors did a phenomenal job. Others grew more comfortable in their role.
Things that don't work
- The effects feel cheap/ hurried in some places. CGI can be quite obvious and jarring.
- The pacing is inconsistent across episodes. Seems they had different directors like the animation but this may not have been as good a choice for something that would invariably be contrasted with the animated series
All that said, it's miles ahead of the film adaptation. And while not quite the animated original, it's entertaining enough that on completion you're left looking forward to seeing how the rest of the story will come to life
