My fiancé and I were flipping through options on Netflix and came across Look Both Ways. I started the movie saying “you gotta love a cheesy chick flick!” I didn’t expect it to keep his interest, but the multiverse aspect caught both our attention and we were eager to see how the dual storyline would play out.
*spoilers ahead*
As you can see, I gave it 5 stars. This isn’t because it was a blockbuster-lifechanging movie. It’s because it was an artistic, heartfelt, truthful movie about choices and dreams and sacrificial love.
I loved the fun animations and creative expression throughout the movie. She didn’t just talk about being an animator, it was shown and depicted in the movie. We saw bits of her films and drawings. I loved that.
It upheld morals that the world has seemingly lost. Family is a priority, broken and imperfect but loving nonetheless. There was no cheating glorified, but honor was given in the timing of relationships. It’s easy to romanticize main characters so much that we celebrate when they get together, even if that means infidelity. They also didn’t feel the need to sexualize every relationship. Sex was implied without having to be shown. Lastly, her choice to keep the baby was exactly that. A choice to be a mom. And it resulted in a messy, beautiful, challenging, meaningful life. The dialogue about motherhood and grief and individuality was real and honest. And her LA single life was also both rewarding and challenging.
I loved the hopeful perspective this movie represented. Look Both Ways, there’s not always one right answer. There is happiness and joy and hope to be had, even when things are hard.
