I desperately tried with this book. I started it. Disliked it. Had a break, started again, made it to chapter 30 and sorry but I had to just give in. I tried so hard to like the book, the story, the concept but it just didn't cut it for me. I cannot enjoy a Bond novel where Bond doesn't appear for the majority. Partly why 'The Spy Who Loved Me' is the least favourite of the Fleming novels for me.
The level of detail in Sherwood's story is great don't get me wrong, but for me, there's loads of back and forth with characters. I found it hard to keep up. Each with their own complexities. I'm probably simple minded in that respect, but I lost interest in trying to keep up. I do love the villians master plan but I don't think he was portrayed very strongly either, again, compared to other novels. I may have been proved wrong if I completed the book maybe(?)
When I found out in the second novel (which I won't be buying) that 007 is still missing, I immediately thought it would be the same book, same searching missions, same back stories and complexities. Again, I hope I'm wrong but I've checked out of this Kim Sherwood trilogy and have reverted back to the thrills of John Gardner.
