I was baffled by Bob Woodward’s comments on July 19, related to President Trump’s racist tweets and incendiary campaign rally. He acknowledged that this was an intolerable action by the President. Although not a single leader of the Republican Party has publicly rebuked the President for his statements, Woodward claimed he knew many Republicans were upset by it. He failed to mention a single one. Either they don’t exist or they lack the courage to speak out against this outrage. The most mystifying interchange came after the video of Kevin McCarthy denying that Trump’s tweets were racist was played. Woodward opined that if McCarthy were given “truth serum” he would acknowledge that Trump ‘s tweets were racist. So we are to conclude that if only McCarthy were drugged and unable to consciously dissemble he would speak the truth. Is this a defense of McCarthy’s behavior? What is Woodward trying to say? If we give the Republicans “truth serum” they will confirm what is already obvious to the rest of America? If this is Woodward’s contribution let’s hear from someone else.
