Although I loved Fallout 3 & 4, I’d have to give Starfield bit of a thumbs down.
Mechanics are similar to Fallout, dialog trees are the same, similar skills advancement and weapon crafting - although I got through the main game without needing very many upgrades. Most of the skills I haven’t even looked at yet, and don’t have a lot of interest in spending the time to acquire (currently level 57?).
Base building is completely unnecessary, and not that much fun.
Main quest and a few of the bigger quests are ok, the smaller side quests are only if you’re bored and need to waste your time or the need to complete everything.
Space battles are rubbish, but crafting ships can be ok.
No Man’s Sky is a much more interesting build/explore game than this, or if they built in the game Satisfactory it would bring some purpose to building bases.
Right now it’s just a bunch of different capabilities with nothing to tie it all together. I get the sense they tried to do too much and as a result, nothing is amazing. Having said that, the graphics are nice and the main cities interesting to look at.
Nothing degrades with use and so you don’t risk dying if you run out of food or water, so it’s not very compelling. There needs to a scarcity and difficulty / impact from your decisions in games to make you think about how you spend your time and resources.
Guns and food are similar to Borderlands - too many varieties and too easily attainable. You end up throwing away legendary weapons very early on. With food, there’s soooo many variations that it’s tedious to figure out which ones to keep and use. You end up scrolling through huge inventory.
Maybe one day they’ll add more compelling content, but right now I’m not driven to spend anymore time on it - especially now Alan Wake 2 is released…
If I wanted to summarise the game - it would be that it’s ok, just not very compelling.
