Between Barbie and TMNT, this has been the summer of success for unconnected originals. That being said, this could launch the new DCU. Though it does make 1 reference to Superman, it feels very different from the Synderverse DCEU. It gave James Gunn vibes with the comedy, the cosmos, the colorfulness - and also the family dynamics, which definitely takes center stage. You care about all the characters by the end of the movie because the writer takes the time to develop them all (save for maybe one). Because there is more emphasis on relationship, there are not as many action scenes except where it actually moves the story forward. But it pays off because the CGI for once doesn’t look rushed. Everyone in theatre was laughing, watching intently, and left talking about it just like I am now. I docked one star for the first scene which really should have been edited out.
