Update:
Man I love this show lol. I understand the high ratings now. But I still don't care for present-day Maximo's & Hugo's acting. As for the flashbacks, absolutely still love them and the cast.
After four episodes, I still did not understand all of the glowing five-star reviews. As I watched the fifth episode, I think I realized what my issue was: I can't seem to get over older Maximo's and Hugo's acting. They are what make the show cheesy in a bad way and, honestly, they are almost unbearable to watch and listen to. As for the flashbacks, I totally love young Maximo's character; he's very likable and I am interested in seeing his story play out. The supporting cast, minus young Maximo's arch nemesis, are great additions to the show. I do appreciate the light hearted, family friendly dynamic of the show, the setting in 80s Mexico. But, goodness, that boy Hugo cannot act to save his life. It really knocks points off for the show for me, personally. It really depends on how the rest of the season (if I even get through it) plays out if I bother to watch season two.
