As an older woman of 63 years, I identified with the complexity of this portrayal of life through the eyes of an 11 year old child. She's Senegalese, a Muslim , responsible for taking care of her younger siblings while her mother works and lives as a single parent. Although Amy's mother is married, her Muslim husband is marrying a second wife, which further traumatized Amy, as she tries desperately to rebel and fit in with her precocious bully dancers.
