I heard a promo interview for this documentary on NPR. I wanted to see this movie but it was already gone from the theaters by the time I got the time to watch it. Imagine my joy in finding a DVD of this at my local library. The first time I watched it I cried all the way through it. Because it is a documentary I can keep it for three weeks. So far I have watched it every night and I will probably watch it every night until it's due back to the library. Then, I'll probably check it out again.
I watched Mister Rogers' Neighborhood as a child for 2 or 3 years. When I was 8 I felt I outgrew it. This documentary brought back to me just how important this show was to my development. I always thought he was a good person, but the documentary really showed me just how much of an exceptional person he was and what a talent. He wrote some beautiful songs, all the scripts for the shows and did most of the puppetry. I have been doing some internet research about him and by all true accounts he was who he appeared to be on the show. I was very dishearten to learn that PBSKids took his shows off the site. I am looking forward to the Tom Hanks movie. I only hope it is as thorough and true to Fred Rogers as this Documentary has been. Thank you Morgan Neville for making this Documentary and thank you Joanne Rogers for agreeing to let it be made. We need Fred Rogers more than ever right now.
